Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Aqualung
Song: I’ll Put A Spell On You
Yeah, I know. OC much? But it’s so beautiful, in a wistful, hushed kind of way.

Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Song: Take 5
This song makes me think of Pleasantville, when the rain washes most of the remaining gray away. It’s also one of the only instrumental songs I can run to.

Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Beck feat. Cat Power
Song: Orphans
I was a little nervous about the new Beck album. Beck is already odd enough, and adding Dangermouse’s melancholy pyschadelic electronic beats could have been awesome or awful. Thankfully, especially given the general disappointment that was The Information, it seems to be the former. Cat Power actually doesn’t add much, but the song is fine without her.

A Case Of The Mondays
We all get ‘em, even in the summer (especially in the summer?). Here’s to wallowing, gloriously.

Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Badly Drawn Boy
Song: Above you, below me
Sometimes BDB’s leans too heavily on disconnected, trickling off instrumentals, but this song, which he wrote for About a Boy, is cohesive, poignant perfection.

Artist: MF Doom featuring Talib Kweli Song: Old School Rules Because I often find myself making up a miracle flow over a cereal bowl and a paused beat from the stereo. |
|
Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Song: Cold Son
Sometimes Stephen Malkmus can veer off into jam band limbo, but here he’s at his brooding, crisp and soaring melodied best.

Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: Paolo Conte
Song: Via Con Me
This song just makes me happy, in a retro, skipping about Capri in poufy skirts kind of way. I first heard it in the totally underrated Catherine Zeta Jones/Aaron Eckhart food porn vehicle No Reservations, though it’s probably older than its costars.

Artist: Beck Song: Debra This song, off the mainly electro-cowboy hip-hopping Midnite Vultures, totally cracks me up. Beck sounds like Prince as parodied by Ween, complete with falsetto yowls bedroom whispers, and Zankou Chicken. |

Artist: Fleet Foxes Song: White Winter Hymnal There’s something sort of medieval about this song; something that makes me think of hunting in capes and doublets with flasks of mead and ivory horns. Connotations aside, it’s a gorgeous, layered piece of shimmer pop from a buzzworthy Seattle band. |

Summer Song Of The Day
Artist: The national
Song: City Middle
I love The national pretty much across the board, and this song has some of their best imagery. Gatoring around the warm beds of beginners? Weird memories involving long white socks and red shoes? Tennessee Williams? Awesome.
