Who’s Your Favorite Ross School Graduate?

[Picture via CobraSnake] Did you know that the Hamptons has only one K-12 private school? You would think this place would be stock full of them. Then again, not many people stick around after the summer season. The Ross School (yes, the same one that you see on plenty of event and party invitations) is located in East Hampton, and has less than 400 kids enrolled in grades 5-12… More »

Sophia Bastian Makes Her Way From Talkhouse To Surf Lodge

[Pictures by Rob Rich] Sophia Bastian is taking the East End by storm. First introduced to our boss lady in New York City, Rachelle recommended we catch a show by the “Jazz School Drop Out” when she sang at Stephen Talkhouse last Tuesday. More of a weekday crowd (ie. quiet and intimate) than we were used to from the rowdy Amagansett bar, we were able to experience her music up close and personal. And we were hooked. So of course we were elated when we heard she was singing another set just five days later at Surf LodgeMore »

Eavesdropping Is What Guests Do Best…

  • Who even knew there was an official Bacardi Rum House in the Hamptons? Before the party gets shut down for good by the Town Of Southampon, we certainly wouldn’t mind an invitation to check out the scene for ourselves [EHS]
  • The Hamptons seems to be the place for impromptu concerts. First it was Bon Jovi at Blue Parrot, now its Jimmy Buffett at Stephen Talkhouse. Buffett surprised the crowd alongside Ilo Ferreria this past Wednesday [BlogHamptons]

Inda Eaton Proves Cowgirls Can Sing The Blues Too

inda eatonThe line between folk and country can often seems almost neglibible, yet I love the former and loathe the latter. To me country always seems maudlin, whiny, and lacking the wry humor and deft melodies that make folk so enjoyable. The singer/guitarist/pianist/songwriter Inda Eaton falls pretty much squarely into the folk camp, though many of her songs have a definite indie-rock edge.

A little Bonnie Raitt, a little early-Jewel-minus-the-complaining, Inda’s sound is spare and tight, the melodies perfect foils for the lyrics. More »

Chris Scianni Resurrects The 90’s

stephen talkhouseIt’s fitting that Chris Scianni has jammed with Joe Cocker, Steely Dan, and Blind Melon, as his own music shares much of these bands’ low key, free-wheeling acoustic vibe. Listening to songs like “Let’s Make A Deal,” with its fun, lighthearted lyrics and steel drumming reminds me of the best of mid-nineties pop. Scianni’s voice is nothing particularly memorable -it’s slightly thin, and raspy, but his instrumentals are surprisingly polished, and occasionally innovative. If you like Citizen King, Lou Reed, Eve 6, or Sublime, (and really, how can’t you?) you will totally dig Scianni. He’s playing at the Talkhouse tonight at 11, and tickets are only $10.

Suddyn Brings The Luck Of The Irish To Montauk

montauk bandMost musicians in search of fame and fortune head to New York or L.A.; Montaukers Alan (lead vocals, piano) and Jarrett Steil (backing vocals, guitar) went to Dublin. It proved to be a smart move. Soon after arriving, the brothers met up with their Irish soulmates, Colin O Dwyer (bass) and Brendan Connolly (drums) and formed the brooding rock band, Suddyn, whose Spacehog-meets-Snow Patrol-meets Damien Rice songs such as “Drowning Souls” and “Gravity” quickly rose to the top of the Irish charts.

Grandmaster Flash Brings His Turntable To The Talkhouse

grandaddy of hip hopGrandmaster Flash is generally considered to be one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, and with good reason. Cutting, scratching, using an electronic beat box, sampling… all were techniques he either invented or perfected. He and his bandmates who comprised Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the self-titled first MC’s, responsible for the inception and flourishing of rap music through songs like “Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel,” “Superrappin’”, and “The Message.”

In March of 2007, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and this past year Flash put out a memoir, My Life, My Beats. Old-schoolers and anyone who curses hip-hop’s current state should catch the fascinating pioneer at the Talkhouse tonight at 10. Click here to buy tickets.

A Taj Mahal In Amagansett

blues singerWorld music, though it may contain hints of several cultures, usually focuses on one. The music of the great bluesman Taj Mahal, however, manages to combine reggae, zydeco, jazz, caribbean, hawaiian, and west african folk, latin american street music, and gospel, into coherent, and suprisingly unforced melodies.

Taj (born Henry St. Clair Fredricks) has been composing and performing since the 60’s, and his music has evolved from pure rootsy blues to its current multi-ethnic busking, from one acoustic guitar to 20 different instruments, without losing steam or heart. Tonight, he’s playing at the Talkhouse at 8; general admission’s $150, and VIP’s $165. Click here to buy tickets, and do it soon as they’re almost gone!

Aztec Two-Step Brings Gen. Beat To The Talkhouse

rex fowler, nat shulmanSo long as it isn’t too plaintive or twangy, I usually enjoy folk music. Add splashes of acoustic rock and literary sensibilities and my iTunes is going to get a little bigger. So it goes with the stalwart troubadours Aztec Two-Step (named after Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s “A Coney Island of the Mind”), who’ve been putting out narrational, wistful folk rock since 1972.

The band is comprised of singer/strummer/songwriters Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, and while their sound is very reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkle and Cat Stevens, their penchant for the swinging sixties is their own. More »
