Fourth of July weekend is long behind us, yet we’re still feeling a bit unsatisfied as we somehow managed to miss out on every single fireworks celebration. That’s right, the firework industries busiest weekend and we didn’t see one sparkler, roman candle, bottle rocket, or any sort of pyrotonic display. Luckily, we just received word of another chance to catch more sparkling flares and fountains More »
While these trunks may not look like much compared to some of the patterned and pretty things we’ve picked before, in this case, it’s all about quality. Birdwell Beach Britches, the mom and pop company based out of Santa Ana, California, is “hardcore surfwear for men”. So hardcore, in fact, that the company that has been producing topnotch official lifegaurding boardshorts for over 30 years doesn’t feel they need a topnotch website - But don’t let their basic and less than aesthetically pleasing site fool you. Their product will certainly make up for it. So how did we find a company so obscure? More »
Sometimes the glam and the glitz of a long weekend can get to be a little much. Don’t get us wrong, we love a nice cool glass of rose at Day & Night, or checking out what label Nikki Hilton has on at Lily Pond as much as the next weekender. But if you’re looking for somewhere to take a load off after all the preening, plop your pretty butt in plastic chairs, and take a break from it all, we might have just the place for you. We can’t say John Scott’s Surf Shack is off the beaten path, because it certainly is not. More »
- Its not everyday that you see a woman fighting fires, but even rarer to see a woman firefighter win the Rookie Firefighter Of The Year Award. One Quogue woman who stands at 5′3″ and runs approximately 70 miles a week recently received this outstanding award [27 east]
- As if there are not enough polls or lists of “what’s hot and not” in the Hamptons, Ok! Magazine has just put out their own very special guide to the what they consider are the very best places in the Hamptons. Of course tabloids only know what is best out here [Newsday]

Even though houses on the beach seem to be the most sought after commodity in the Hamptons, this mostly wooden mansion on the canal in Quogue wouldn’t have us minding the walk to the beach one bit. The vast, sprawling lawn is more greenery than all of New York City has outside of Central Park combined practically. More »

Okay so they may not be causing as big of stir as the memorable Montauk Monster did this summer, but these tiny monsters are personally causing me a ton of grief. Saturday, at the Surf Club in Quogue, the conversation with my newest companion went something like this:
Friend after coming back from a dip in the ocean: “Man that was one of the most unpleasant experiences I’ve had in my life!”
Me: “What are you talking about?!”
Friend: “The jellyfish! They are all over!”
Me: “Yeah the little bits that float by? Stop being such a baby! I’ve been in the ocean the last 3 days, just don’t let it bother you, become one with the jellyfish pieces.”
Twenty minutes later I get in….I realize the extent of the Jellyfish (you literally feel like you are swimming through a tub of noodles). it is impossible to swim, and there is definitely no “becoming one with the jellyfish”. I hope this whole situation gets sorted out by the weekend….because I absolutely HATE admitting when I’m wrong.
To my inquisitive nephew William: THIS is what a Jellyfish looks like. I love you.
In Quogue, it seems like everywhere I turn there is someone showing support for their Winklevoss twins. Cameron and Tyler are in Beijing currently racing in the men’s pair for our country…they just won first place in the men’s pair Repechage race. You can watch them in the video above. All eyes will be on the Quogue boys this Wednesday as they move on to the semi finals!

From all looks of it, I think I made a good decision to stay out East today. So good, in fact, that I’m thinking I will stay in beautiful Quogue all week long. I am just starting to realize the lack of coverage we have from Westhampton/Quogue areas. Thankfully, my Quogue Connection has given me loads of pointers. I will be hitting up Dockers for the Lobster bake in East Quogue, the Bev Cardo store in Quogue, the field club and the Shinnecock Yatch Club. I’m also going to check out the school house here as I heard it’s the oldest in the country! If you have any other tidbits from me for this week as I romp around the Western most parts of the Hamptons, please don’t hesitate to inform!
Oh, and thanks for the handy map Quogue Connection!
Madonna may have missed her own party this weekend, but I was far from the hamptons social set, and even further from caring. We took the weekend off (again) from the party circuit and focused on some simpler pleasures. Friends (both new and old), good food, and some good old fashioned fun. This weekend, in Quogue, I learned the ins and outs of the Surf Club, The Q, and the Fruit King. I learned how to poach a sword fish and stuff a crepe. I got preyed on by jellyfish, and buried in the beautiful sands of Long Island. There were tomatoes involved, and ice cream…scallops, vino, and salt water. There were few (read: zero) showers and even less cell phone usage. The only time I looked at my computer was to watch what was happening in Beijing. Sometimes it’s okay to sleep too much, eat too much, and lay in the sun for too long. I may have gotten a tad greedy this weekend, but this is what summer is all about.

A wonderful night was had by all last Saturday night at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge’s Annual Summer Benefit “Wild Night for Wildlife”. Over 600 guests strolled the grounds of the 1900’s-era Wiccecomac in Quogue, home of Anthony and Jennifer Oldfield, who have done a great job on the restoration of the house and grounds, including a beautiful sunken garden that guests were drawn to all night. The evening included silent and live auctions of art, unique experiences, and many items to help winners enjoy all that the East End has to offer. Items off the grill and sushi were just some of the delectables provided by Sydney’s, and guests danced the night away to the sounds of the Sweetwater Orchestra. The bartenders were serving some thing new; Ty-ku, a sake citrus liquor - really good!

Okay so I thought I’d make it through the week without having to post on that strange creature that has washed up on the shores of Montauk….you know the one that EVERYONE’s been talking about. What is it? Real or photoshopped? Sea turtle without shell? Skinned Racoon? Mutated dog from a lab off the coasts? Well, quite frankly I AM starting to care about getting to the bottom of this mess…if only so I don’t ever have to stare at that disgusting photo again! (If you have been living in a hole and care to see the thing go HERE, you can even vote on what you think it is…WHAT FUN!)
Ah we may NEVER actually know the answer to this mystery. Sometimes the throw up of the sea can be strange indeed. Reminds me of this post from last year (see photo above). This poor guy got beached around Quogue….sad story for sure, but at least we could IDENTIFY the creature that time!
