Eavesdropping Is What Guests Do Best…

  • If you unexpectedly wake up the morning after and have a pounding headache, you might be able to attribute it to the secretly cheap vodka that some Hamptons restaurants have been sneaking into your cocktails. Otherwise, you likely have what is known as a hangover [PageSix]
  • When traveling by plane losing you luggage at the airport is one thing, but losing your luggage on the Hampton Luxury liner is another. The driver accidentally left a passenger’s bag on the sidewalk and upon realizing it when they went back it was gone [Twitter]

Interview: Celebrating 80 Years With Montauk Yacht Club’s Executive Chef Michael Domitrovich

[Michael Domitrovich. Photo via PaperMag] The Montauk Yacht Club is celebrating their 80th anniversary this year with a jam-packed weekend from start to finish including a Friday night Brooklyn Brewery BBQ, an activity-filled “Swinging Saturday Lunch” followed by live jazz, dancing, and a 1920’s faux casino on the Yacht Club’s waterfront Great Lawn for their Roaring 20’s bash. We had a chance to interview the yacht club’s new executive chef Michael Domitrovich who introduced a new Southern flavor to the yacht club’s Gulf Coast Kitchen, Hurricane Alley, Barracuda Bar, and Turtle Lounge this summer. The young and talented Domitrovich is not only an executive chef but also a professional multi-tasker with a published cookbook and a few successful plays under his belt. More »

How To Survive Monday Nights In The Hamptons? Please Do Tell

The GofG Hamptons crew needs a little assistance. With all the buzz that’s been surrounding Blue Parrot along with what we believed to be solid proof they were open, we decided what better way to spend our Monday night than heading to East Hampton to check it out for ourselves. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a dark, empty Blue Parrot and a “Sorry We Are Closed” sign… More »

Get Thee To Turtle Tuesdays!

turtle crossing\'s purple turtleOkay, people, we’ve given you the details; we’ve recommended not once, not twice, but three times that you go, and still we hear from TC’s drink-maestro Greg that Turtle Crossing’s Turtle Tuesdays are decidedly under-attended. Why? Hello: turtle costumes+free drinks+ cute bartender+ jalepeno hush puppies = fun time. Throwback fun, kitschy fun, sloppy fun, gut-busting fun… Plus Greg’s updated the Purple Turtle cocktails that come gratis with your costumes. Now instead of a grape martini, you’ll get a lavender daiquiri. Awesome, right? So go, already!

Why We Love Townline BBQ

townline bbqBecause the menu is simple, rib-stickin Texan ‘cue. Because the menu’s printed on a board, McDonald’s style, in fat red letters. Because the staff are friendly, and honest. “You sure you want that?” one asked Rachelle after she ordered the fried mac ‘n cheese. Because she did want it, and rightly so.

Because, in addition to burnt ends, pulled chicken, and ribs, Townline also offers something called Texas caviar, a mix of black-eyed peas, peppers, onions, and lime chili sauce. Because the decor is a mix of industrial chic and rustic lodge. Because a meal there will tide you over all week. More »

The Candy Kitchen Impresses Again

ice cream in bridgehamptonBy John Hering
So here I am again, rating food without qualification. But I will try to explain with integrity why The Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton has the best ice cream I have ever scooped. A high compliment to be sure, but I feel the CK is deserving. Upon employee recommendation I enjoyed a two scoop bowl (for $6.50! Damn these Hamptons), half strawberry and half banana.

What’s In Store For Station Road Restaurant?

water mill train stationDoes anyone know what the story is regarding Station Road Restaurant? I read an article in the East Hampton Star about a dispute over what to do with the former Water Mill train station, but it made no mention of turning it into a restaurant. How then, to explain the sign? Apparently its fate should have already been sealed, but I’m having difficulty obtaining it.  More photos and official closing note below:

Fresno After Sunday

fresno new american cuisineIn the Spring of 2004, veteran restauranteurs David Loewenberg and Michael Nolan opened up what soon became one of my favorite restaurants in the Hamptons, and now my favorite summer prix-fixe!

On a quiet street behind the East Hampton train station - the street for which the restaurant is named, there humbly rests Fresno. Sister restaurants include The Beacon in Sag Harbor and Red Bar Brasserie in Southampton. My first meal here of New American cuisine left me grinning from ear to ear. More »

Why We Love Princess Diner

southampton diner

Because it isn’t upscale kitschy; it’s just kitschy. Because you can never have too much chrome. Because it serves sardine sandwiches. With coleslaw. And onion rings. Because the food is actually good. Because it has deep, comfy booths. Because the ice cream comes in silver dishes. Because the waitstaff is professional, and quick. Because the portions, like the prices, are decidedly un-Hamptonian.

Annona Shares Her Harvest

Annona WesthamptonLocation can be misleading; when I read that the restaurant Annona was located above (and owned by) the Coachworks/MMH showroom, I imagined indifferent, overpriced eats in a faux-opulent setting. Not so, apparently. The critics from NYT, NY Mag, and Newsday are only a few of the simple Italian menu’s fans, and with dishes like wood-oven roasted octopus, wild mushroom risotto, and seared scallops with morels and sunchoke puree, I can see why. Fridays, Annona boasts live music and 2 for 1 drink specials, so if sipping a Fleur de Amore (tequila, fresh grapefruit, and elderberry liquor) while listening to acoustic guitar sounds like your idea of a happy hour, you might want to head over to Westhampton this evening.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name: The Surf Lodge, Montauk

A GofG pal and I frequently talk about how we enjoy Amagansett and Montauk so much because their beaches remain the least touched by Manhattan glamour. When I beach, I do it casually, so maybe I’m really still a Hamptons girl, but I like the peace and laid back vibes that you can only find in Montauk. Now there’s a new kid on the block where everyone can enjoy the cool energy for a long weekend, mid-week retreat or just a cocktail on the water.

Rob McKinley (he’s designed it as well), Steven Kamali, Jamie Mulholland, Jayma Cardosa and Steve Kasuba have created the hippest new hangout in the Hamptons - The Surf Lodge. They are the grand Manhattan kings and queen of Goldbar and Cain - they’ve successfully had spots in the Hamptons and currently have the hottest beach spot on Paradise Island in the Bahamas at their Cain at the Cove. Cain at the Cove is like a lush beach/pool/club playground and I expect the Surf Lodge will be a great addition to the family.
