Hamptons Cliché Of The Week: Zoophilia
In my month and a half out here, I’ve noticed that a) my fellow Hampsters flock to causes like ants to a dropped ice cream cone, and b) especially if said causes aid and abet our furry or feathered or leathered friends. This Saturday you can “Get Wild” at the Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons‘ annual benefit, while next Saturday you may have “A Wild Night for Wildlife” in honor of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge.
It isn’t all fun and games, though. In fact, some put pets before parties. Many a firework and stretch of sand lies untouched, lest a young piping plover suffer development retardation, and in Southampton, circuses are domestic-only affairs. While most of the time I can’t help but think we ought to help out our fellow naked apes first and foremost, one tongue-lolling pant from a sea-grizzled cairn terrier is all it takes to sway my mind, at least temporarily.

Haven Makes Music (And Us) Go Green

My friends and I were shopping in Southampton when Rachelle called from the city. She, Stephanie Wei, and I were going to model dresses at this party. It was going to be huge. Everyone was going. Even Diddy. Pressing her for more information proved useless, but I was intrigued enough to hightail it over the Baptist Church on the Bridgehampton Turnpike, where a shuttle bus was waiting to whisk us away to Hennessey’s HYT ME Estate in Water Mill.
Once there, we were immediately handed over to the spunky and chic Kaight, whose organically-crafted dresses from Bahar Shahpar, Mociun, Nature vs. Future and Sublet Clothing, and handmade hats by ArtikalNYC from we were lucky enough to show off. Seriously, these dresses, especially Stephanie’s, with its zigzags of red and white, jaunty bow, and fun bubble shape, were absolutely lovely, and wearing a wide tilted brim straw hat made me feel like a southern belle at the races.

LOLA Shows Us How To ‘Cue, LES-Style
I pulled up to the Cruickshank’s residence with the 4th of July party in full swing. It looked and felt like an overdue reunion. Everyone was munching on hamburgers and hot dogs and drinking delicious cocktails. There were definitely some cutting-edge fashion ensembles in the backyard and the music was better than anything you’ve heard at any nightclub recently, courtesy of DJ Vibe, Max Barbaria, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and a few sets by Poppa Cruickshanks.

Fourth Of July With The Real Housewives (For Real)

Remember on one of the first episodes of the REAL HOUSEWIVES of MANHATTAN we were taken to Jill Zarin’s Hamptons’ home, given a glimpse of the splendor in which she lives, and were invited in to see the way she and her friends ‘roll’ in the Hamptons (events, private parties and great restaurants)? Well, if someone had told me I would be standing on the Zarin’s backyard lawn exactly four months later, celebrating the 4th of July with the Zarins, their friends and (most of) the cast of the REAL HOUSEWIVES, I would not have believed it.

Denim and Diamonds ‘08: Where Be The Texas Bling?
As I mentioned earlier, Rachelle and I decided to forgo Beaches, Bays, Denim, and Diamonds for Beaded dresses and Blackjack. This decision had nothing to do with the causes; we care about finding a cure for cancer just as much, if not more than we do about caring for the terminally ill, and nature preservation is nothing to scoff at. No, the decision had nothing to do with causes and everything to do with theme and crowd.
Beaches didn’t have one at all (hello, hippie earth mother would have been awesome) and we didn’t really have any diamonds to flesh out our denim, so roaring twenties it was.

Clothes Make The Men…
Straight-up throwback awesomeness from our Quogue prepsters. The one in the foreground is wearing garb culled from a former flapper’s closet.

Summer Sparklers, Or Where To See Those 4th Of July Fireworks
Unlike Easter, or Halloween, Independence Day is a holiday whose appeal has yet to lose its luster. Part of this is doubtless due to the holiday’s perennial summer date, part to the history behind it, and the rest lies with the ageless appeal of the day’s activities. Parades, BBQ’s, and greased-watermelon contests will never go out of style, but my (and most people’s) favorite tradition has a little more sizzle.
