southampton beach

I have a confession to make: in the three weeks I’ve been here, I’ve yet to swim in the ocean. I’ve only gotten my feet sandy once, and that was to take pictures. Sad, right? I know that the beaches here are nice, but only because I’ve read that on the internet. So I’m asking for your advice: if you only have limited time, which beaches are worth it? How do the rest of you busy bees make homage to Poseidon?

I can only speak about the beachs that I am more familiar with. Let’s face it, the Long Island coast line beaches along the Hamptons are world famous and most beautiful with their sand dunes and seascape. The ocean is still somewhat cold, but when it warms up to the low 70’s during the summer, it is delightful. Swimming in the clean salt water with some mild rolling waves is glorious! You have to be very careful because the Hamptons beachs can be subject to risky undertows which could quickly sweep you out into the ocean, even on days when the ocean seems relatively calm. It is best to swim at the beaches which have lifeguards. If you get caught in an undertoe, don’t panic, swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the undertoe area and then head for the shore.

In Amagansett, there is the Indian Wells beach which is a family beach and one of my favorites; also the Atlantic Avenue beach, also known as “hot dog beach”, attracts more of the singles crowd. The Main Beach in East Hampton is renowned and is a favorite for many. All of the beaches in the Town of East Hampton require a beach permit based on where you reside in the town. Some of the beaches will allow you to pay to park there for a day if you do not have a permit. Happy swimming and sunbathing!

And the beaches he doesn’t mention are the best — and kept secret from blogs for a very good reason!! So keep hitting up Main Beach, Atlantic and Indian Wells — what ever you do, do not look elsewhere!
