When we’re not out east on the weekends, we’re throwing parties on our rooftop. You’d be amazed what you can do with a couple of Heineken keg cans, a few bottles of cheap red wine, hotdogs, and corn. Our rooftop beerbeque last night had quite a cast of characters from bankers, gropers, bloggers, scenesters and everything in between. Well we could continue to write about it, but pictures are probably the easiest way to understand the shenanigans…
The themes of my weekend. After drinking too much champagne in Quogue, and not enough Rosé at East Hampton soirees, I winded down my weekend in my favorite summer spots for a true “un-birthday.”
Upon explaining to George Gurley that this was the “Summer of Surf Lodge” for me…I had to follow up with that bold claim, ending Sunday night listening to Bebel Gilberto’s beautiful voice wow the guests at Luigi Tadini’s “un-birthday” bash. Never have I seen a more stylish, and gracious host than Mr. Tadini as he made sure each and every one of his guests were taken care of.
I wish I could stay out here forever….or at least a couple more days. But it’s back to New York, a city on the verge of some big thing I keep hearing people talking about. Something to do with fall, and fashion. I can’t comment yet, my head’s still stuck in the sand.
September 1st will be the season premiere of that show we have all come to know and love, Gossip Girl. There have been four short previews, of which this is my favorite, though the one with the nod to “Lilypond” is a classic as well.

This weekend was another favorite of mine. It was a perfect ending to my week spent rolling around the beautiful town of Quogue. I am in full on “Save Summer” mode now, and I have the fresh tan, crumbled clothes, and sandy shoes to prove it. Thursday, after filming Plum TV at Sunset Beach, I finally got a chance to taste the fresh catch of the day at Dockers in Quogue. Several beach runs, swims in the ocean, and trips across the Shelter Island South Ferry, later I’m heading back to the city. Between the Surf Clubs, the half and half’s, and the 505’s, I was a busy girl. Although, if there were any parties to be aware of, I was in the dark….save for the intimate affair at Sunset on Saturday night.
I have been practicing the art of “saving memories” as each shell I pass on the sand, each jelly fish that grazes my skin, and every sail boat I overturn becomes committed to my own. I will need to resort to these in the long winter months that lie ahead.

Does anyone personally know Jim Clark? Can you make an introduction? I.must.have.his.boat….someday.
She stands tall and proud; a testament to today’s technology and yesterday’s splendor. She’s Athena; goddess of the sea… and the most significant splash since the Gemini orbiter fell to earth. She’s not only the world’s largest privately owned sailing yacht, but she has single handedly resurrected the golden age of sail, while capturing the imagination of mariners worldwide. [Yacht Forums]
The interior is gorgeous too. I love the symmetry in the photo above. Definitely some good Fung Sei taking place. “With only 20 knots of wind filling her sails, Athena heels at 10 degrees and cruises leisurely at 14.5 knots. With the topsails unfurled, she will gain another 1.5 knots. When the wind reaches Force 5, she’s capable of 18.9 knots.” I want to sail the world in Athena. Who’s joining me?

I live everyday like I were going to die tomorrow. Liam McMullan and I went skydiving recently in Long Island. I had just gotten back from Seattle and Liam called, “I’m going skydiving in the morning. Want to come?” My response, “Sure, why not?” I’d always wanted to go skydiving and I was just waiting for the right time. It was on the way to the Hamptons, where I was going the next day, anyway. At 6 am, we took a train to Huntington and picked up Liam’s car at his grandmother’s house.
I am scared of heights. For reals. I figured that jumping out of a plane at 13,500 feet would be the perfect way to conquer my fear. As we drove up to the Long Island Skydiving Center, I felt mixed emotions - I was super excited, but at the same time, I was scared to death.
No idea there was a Hampton’s Coffee in Westhampton. I miss the one in Bridge, the site of the most money I’ve ever spent on two eggs, (sunny side up), and some wheat toast. The interview with golf pro Heniz Haaz (still a work in progress), the numerous bags of coffee bought that came in handy for our morning blog routines, the bran muffins with apple bits in the middle, the free magazines…oh and then the time we saw ourselves on the flyer for the Watermill Kettle Bell interview we did with Lorna from Core Dynamics. ClAiRe, i mIsS yOu! Oh and, lest I forget, sitting on 27 in traffic watching the people mingling outside that one time. And then that other. And other. And other. Ah…those were the days.
Wait a minute! Summer’s not over yet folks!

Madonna may have missed her own party this weekend, but I was far from the hamptons social set, and even further from caring. We took the weekend off (again) from the party circuit and focused on some simpler pleasures. Friends (both new and old), good food, and some good old fashioned fun. This weekend, in Quogue, I learned the ins and outs of the Surf Club, The Q, and the Fruit King. I learned how to poach a sword fish and stuff a crepe. I got preyed on by jellyfish, and buried in the beautiful sands of Long Island. There were tomatoes involved, and ice cream…scallops, vino, and salt water. There were few (read: zero) showers and even less cell phone usage. The only time I looked at my computer was to watch what was happening in Beijing. Sometimes it’s okay to sleep too much, eat too much, and lay in the sun for too long. I may have gotten a tad greedy this weekend, but this is what summer is all about.
Artist: Aqualung
Song: I’ll Put A Spell On You
Yeah, I know. OC much? But it’s so beautiful, in a wistful, hushed kind of way.
She-who-must-be-named remains nameless. I’m partial to Elouise, or Ellie for short, because she’s kind of pudgy and looks a bit mischievous, but I’m sure you all can come up with something better. Suggestions?
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Song: Take 5
This song makes me think of Pleasantville, when the rain washes most of the remaining gray away. It’s also one of the only instrumental songs I can run to.
Artist: Beck feat. Cat Power
Song: Orphans
I was a little nervous about the new Beck album. Beck is already odd enough, and adding Dangermouse’s melancholy pyschadelic electronic beats could have been awesome or awful. Thankfully, especially given the general disappointment that was The Information, it seems to be the former. Cat Power actually doesn’t add much, but the song is fine without her.
We all get ‘em, even in the summer (especially in the summer?). Here’s to wallowing, gloriously.
The old country seems to be the theme of the day. Celebrate the weekend in style!
As you may have deduced from the title, Intoxicated Zodiac is a blog devoted to cocktails and astrology, inspired by The Martini Horoscope, a booklet given to the author by an eccentric and aged family friend. Like the booklet, IZ assigns potables mainstream and bizarre to various zodiac signs; she also provides a monthly baroscope, seduction by cocktail, and a cocktail personality survey. Mine was pretty spot-on (and mean!), and my recommended beverages, at 11 am, are already looking mighty tasty, particularly the “Pansy-Ass Sake,” printed below (sparkling sake? who knew). How do yours stack up? More »
Artist: Badly Drawn Boy
Song: Above you, below me
Sometimes BDB’s leans too heavily on disconnected, trickling off instrumentals, but this song, which he wrote for About a Boy, is cohesive, poignant perfection.
|
Artist: MF Doom featuring Talib Kweli Song: Old School Rules Because I often find myself making up a miracle flow over a cereal bowl and a paused beat from the stereo. |
Artist: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Song: Cold Son
Sometimes Stephen Malkmus can veer off into jam band limbo, but here he’s at his brooding, crisp and soaring melodied best.
Artist: Paolo Conte
Song: Via Con Me
This song just makes me happy, in a retro, skipping about Capri in poufy skirts kind of way. I first heard it in the totally underrated Catherine Zeta Jones/Aaron Eckhart food porn vehicle No Reservations, though it’s probably older than its costars.

“Simon van Kempen, child”...such was the title underneath this photo on Rob Rich today from the Bridgehampton Polo Match this Saturday. It sent me spinning into hysterics. We all make mistakes, and with the amount of pictures that guy wrangled from this past weekend, it’s a wonder there weren’t more. But this is just classic and I hope it stays. Now, Doug’s lifelong wish of being a Real Housewife has been fulfilled….he’s the CHILD of the van Kempen’s!!!
[FYI: Photo should read: Stewart MaDonald, Douglas Marshall]

Artist: Beck Song: Debra This song, off the mainly electro-cowboy hip-hopping Midnite Vultures, totally cracks me up. Beck sounds like Prince as parodied by Ween, complete with falsetto yowls bedroom whispers, and Zankou Chicken. |
Song: Thing, Thing
Because it’s finally Friday, and in a few ours we too will be able to do our thing, thing.
|
Artist: Fleet Foxes Song: White Winter Hymnal There’s something sort of medieval about this song; something that makes me think of hunting in capes and doublets with flasks of mead and ivory horns. Connotations aside, it’s a gorgeous, layered piece of shimmer pop from a buzzworthy Seattle band. |
|
Artist: The Meat Puppets Song: The Whistling Song I know, the name conjures up some god-awful death metal band, but the Meat Puppets are in fact adept weavers of folk, cowboy blues, and rock. Add whistling into the mosh, and we’ve got ourselves a real winner. |
Artist: Jurassic 5
Song: Concrete Schoolyard
Sometimes J5 can get a bit sanctimonious, but in this song they’re at their warm and fuzzy throwback best.

Because each of the ships is different (and one, the Cape Henlopen, landed at Normandy on D-Day). Because there’s always a breeze. And tons of leg room. Because there’s a deli, and it’s actually decent. Because the deckhands are pleasant and cheery. Because the drive down the North Fork, past vineyard after farmhouse after farmstand after rolling field, is gorgeous and more than worth its distance.
Take a hint from the genius Sam Talbot and mix things up a bit….his burgers are served with a fried egg, this one was devoured in 10 minutes last night.
Or, try the aussie burger and add a pinnaple. Go ahead, get crazy, it’s summer and it’s time to live a little.
Artist: Dire Straits
Song: Romeo and Juliet
This song makes me think of summer barbeques, dancing on decks and getting splintery heels, and, of course, the wonder that is Hot Fuzz.

[The Calexico Cart trades Prince St for the Tanteo Yard]
In the middle of the California desert, about 2 hours from the coast, you’ll find twin cities straddling the border of California and Mexico. The city on the Mexican side is called Mexicali; the one on the California side is called Calexico.
Three brothers, Jesse, Brian, and David Vendley; hailing from Southern California, became obsessed with bringing high quality Cal-Mex cuisine to the streets of NYC. Welcome the Calexico Cart. Their food is made from scratch with only the freshest ingredients. They were named one of the top three food carts in NYC at the Vendy Awards and can be found in Soho on the corner of Prince & Wooster streets between 11am and 4pm.
Artist: Patrick Park
Song: Something Pretty
The title is apt, though the song is slightly (only slightly!) sappy. I like swelling choruses, and he has such a pleasant, poignant voice.
Because I’m tired of cars, yo. Anyways, isn’t this eccentrically adorable? At least it’s a break from the sea of big wheeled cruisers. Plus it’s called a “chopper hogrider,” which is awesome. If you’ve got $150 to spare, it’s yours.

A lounge that lets you read while you’re lying on your stomach? Awesome. Now you can read our fabulous beach books without straining, or neglecting, your back. There’s a padded headrest, and adjustable footrest with three settings. Or you can be social and use it as a normal beach chair. Get it at Brylane Home for $80.

Wednesdays are so…meh. The weekend beckons, but wimpily, and the sunshine taunts from outside our windows. To bust your (and our own) hump-day slumps, we’ve compiled an endorphin-rousting, good cheer-inducing playlist. Feel free to add on. If you want to listen, the playlist is on itunes, under GuestofaGuest Playlist.
Artist: The Doobie Brothers
Song: Black Water
This song seriously has everything -great, rambling lyrics, an a cappella section that actually works, a soaring fiddle, and a great, hooky chorus.

Okay, by now everyone and their kids are heading to Surf Lodge to try Sam Talbot’s award winning dishes (the burger is my new favorite), but so what? The more the merrier is what I say. And, if you need help relaxing once there, follow after these airbound kids who have mastered the term “summering in Montauk.”
Artist: Chester French
Song: She loves everybody
In honor of today’s upcoming interview with a band I love, song about a girl who loves them all.
We are truly guests of guests this weekend out east. Today, we traded last night’s Rosé from Sag Harbor for Cafe Americanos from East Hampton. We.are.tired. Thankfully we have some pretty great service here (wi-fi and baristas…see our new friend Max below).
Our plans later today consist of running on the beach in Sag Harbor, and then heading to Nick Gregory’s house for an aftertoon snack of Cinnamon Life and then its nap time. Max Corrigan, aka Starbuck’s finest below:
Artist: The Verve Pipe
Song: The Freshman
I know it’s a gorgeous, sunny, endorphin-raising day (at least where I am), but for some reason, this little melancholy bit of nostalgia’s been stuck in my head all morning. Whatever happened to the Verve Pipe? Can we swap them for Nickleback? Please?
