Sometimes, on long summer days, I wonder what my BFF’s from childhood are up to….

“Happiness is a piece of mind.”
Bankie Banx & Roots & Herb took over Surf Lodge this weekend. Bankie Banx (born Clement Ashley Banks, 1953, Anguilla) is a reggae singer, is known as the “Anguillan Bob Dylan” [Wiki]. I can not think of a better place or time to go listen to some reggae.

Now this makes me think of weddings and girl scout father-daughter square dances. Just another lil’ shill for the SL.
On DBTH this morning:
A DBTH reader was out east this weekend and headed out to the Surf Lodge and fun was had. Our reader says “it was really fun, it’s really pretty on the water and the design is pretty sweet. The bathroom situation is annoying though. I did not see Rachelle.” Oh, don’t let that ruin your perfect night.

I have been accused more than once of “Shilling” for the Surf Lodge. No, they have never paid me a dime to “promote” their place (like they would NEED to anyway, they’ve been in Vogue, NYTimes, Bravo TV, and practically everything else). I just like it. Here’s another great photo of the lounge area in front of the restaurant. Accuse me of “shilling” all you want, but tell me where else in the world you’re going to find these sweet wicker elephant tables?!
I wake Miss Stephanie Wei who is enjoying her slumber in room #8 at Surf Lodge. She explains to me everything you need to know about sex surf wax.
Well I finally did it…I had a slumber party at Surf Lodge. The bed was so comfortable that I almost didn’t get up. Alas, the coconut coffee and sun drenched deck had my name written all over them. Stephanie Wei is here with me…she’s still sleeping for hopefully a lot longer. We have a BIG day ahead of us (big weekend for that matter), and I need her to be on her A game.
Out of sand, but still. Every Thursday this beach in Montauk hosts a sand castle competition, starting at 9:30. The winner gets a tee-shirt, and you get the opportunity to scope out budding architects. Happy Scoopings!
Hither Hills State Park is located at 50 South Fairview Rd, Montauk.

I can’t believe there was a time where I didn’t love lobster (around age 9 I believe). Thank god that, (besides that one little mishap with the dish at Legal Seafoods in Boston in college), I have gotten over that phase of my life. Lobsters are one of the best things the ocean has to offer us, and growing up in the middle of the country, they were quite the TREAT for me…

Before this past friday, I’d never heard of paddleboarding in any form. Rachelle confused it with kickboarding, and assured me she was very good, until I pulled up a photo of paddleboarders. Virginity established, we headed out to Surf Lodge with Luigi Tadini for a lesson with the affable and adept Zach Bliss.
Bliss, and the rest of the SL staff, assured us we would soon be pb converts, but when we saw how huge the boards were -similar to longboards, only with footpads, we were a little apprehensive. Thankfully the sport, or at least its stand-up version, is as easily mastered as it is enjoyable; within a minute of our on-shore lesson, we, and the delightful Luigi Tadini, were on our occasionally circular way across Fort Pond. Here’s how: More »

Claire and I are sitting with Sam Talbot, Jamie Mulholland, and Steve Kasuba. Here’s a picture of me working in between talks about shark fillets, deep sea fishing in Montauk, and brownies. Did I mention how much I love this place….

[Kelly WIll on V1 Jet on way to see Sam Talbot]
Dreams do come true…this week I hopped a V1 Jet seaplane to Montauk…with Sam Talbot. (You know, the Surf Lodge chef - who just happens to be very handsome in addition to his talents in the kitchen.) It’s not everyday I get a morning phone call offering me a flight from NYC to Montauk, a trip that with zero traffic takes 3 hours! I am blessed with good friends and they always think of me, so off I went to 23rd street and the East River to meet my pilot and board my 40 minute flight to the Hamptons. I arrived to see a perfectly safe and moderately-sized seaplane drifting in the water. The president of the company, Andrew Zarrow, met us at the dock and convinced me that though I have never flown in such a small aircraft, his pilots were professionals.

Judging from Rob Rich’s pictures, it seems like Surf Lodge isn’t in danger of relinquishing its hotspot crown any time soon. Saturday, the great and growly White Buffalo played on the deck to a diverse crowd of Hypnotic-sipping artists, designers, hipsters, and socialites. Scott Campbell, Tracy Feith, Sasha Lazard (who almost made me want to buy a maxi dress), and the gen Y Laurens (not to mention SL owner Jamie Mulholland)…it seems Surf Lodgers are as chicly low-key as the place itself. Rachelle and I have our hopes set on a Friday afternoon wifi session.
It’s Wednesday…which means it’s the day I start itching to get back out east where there’s open air to run around in and no office meetings. While I’ll be back there tomorrow already, I still miss the Hamptons today. That’s why, when I saw this box outside the restaurant supply store on Bowery street I had to smile. It was just sitting there, getting ready to get loaded into a truck and be taken out for shipment to…SURF LODGE in Montauk!? I know Surf Lodge! I was just there! Oh what great mussels they have there! Oh what an attractive staff they have! Oh what a great deck! I exclaimed in my head, like I had a secret that no one else passing by could share in on. More »

Last season, Jamie Mulholland was M.I.A. (well at least out east). He had his hands full at a little place in the Bahamas that created quite the stir. This year, it seems we won’t have to question “Where in the World Is Jamie Mulholland?” anymore because we know exactly where one might find him:
At his own lil surf lodge of course. We hear the guy spends almost every waking hour there. Not a bad decision at all.

The Surf Lodge’s Hostess with the Mostest wins our best styled of the day. We were in love with her floral bubble skirt which she paired perfectly with simplistic whites. She looked fresh and fun, and wore the best accessory throughout the night: her smile. (Such a cliché but sooo true, no accessories were needed because her pearly whites stole the spotlight!)
I slept like a baby last night. In fact, I don’t even remember the last time I’ve had such a comfortable sleep, but I was probably in my preoperational stage of development. No doubt, Piaget would be smiling on behalf of my good fortune, one in which I have one man in particular to thank: Sam Talbot. I had fried “chow chow” oysters, scallops atop an unprecedented partner in crime: mr. watermelon salad, a famous lobster roll sandwich, and orgasmic thai mussels floating around in my belly…which sent me into such a comfortable slumber that not even the horseflys above, choppering away with their city guests in tow could stir me this morning. We are only in the start of the season, but this spot makes me want to dive into an endless summer, much like I dove into their drink bearing the same name.
The Vogue photographer in the foyer belied the laid back vibe inside…unlike most “of the moment hot spots”, I could live on their deck for days without leaving and be a happy happy girl, looking out over their lake and drifting off into dreams of halcyon summers.

It’s early Spring… the season of soft-shell crabs, asparagus, rhubarb and berries. But for the famous seafood shop in between Amagansett and Montauk called The Lobster Roll (most commonly known as “Lunch”) something else is in season… a specialty dish unique to The Lobster Roll called “Puffers.”
So what are these scrumptious treats? They are literally the tail portion of a blowfish, battered, deep fried and served with tartar sauce and (if you ask nicely) malt vinegar. But hurry up! Puffers are only in season for about two more weeks! More »

Sam Talbot’s lobster rolls were a large part of the reason I was so excited about hitting up Surf Lodge this past Sunday, so you can imagine how disappointed I was when I arrived to find the kitchen closed. Now, thanks to our gourmand buddies over at Eater, you can also imagine how good these rolls must be. Eater didn’t like everything (apparently the burgers lack oomph), but they were surprised at the amount of potential in the venue, especially as it was only day 2. Maybe passing up on Spitzer’s Corner was actually a blessing in disguise…

[Inside the newly opened Surf Lodge]
So here, as promised, is my account of Rachelle’s and my Sunday night revelry. We were supposed to hit up the Southampton Hospital By the Sea benefit. Unfortunately two blondes plus a GPS-free vehicle do not a cartographer make, and the only airings our pretty cocktail dresses got was courtesy of the Southampton CVS (it was, at least, a classy, shingled CVS). First destination aborted, we decided that what we really needed was some reggae with a side of lobster rolls, and sped off to Julian Marley’s concert at Montauk’s Surf Lodge. (More photos below)…

Most establishments in the Hamptons seem to fall into one of two categories: old, small, and humble, or new, sprawling, and ostentatious. What then, do we make of Montauk’s Surf Lodge, which opens shop this friday? It’s a new venture, sure, but it’s relatively cozy (32 individually decorated rooms), with tastefully, and playfully nautical appointments. It’s got three bars (the Den, the Bar, and the Deck) and, best of all, Punch exec chef, Top Chef finalist, and winner of Glad’s Steamiest Chef contest, Sam Talbot in its local produce-filled kitchen.
Eager to get some insight into what promises to be the newest member of the Hamptons hotspot coterie, we give Talbot a call…. More »
A GofG pal and I frequently talk about how we enjoy Amagansett and Montauk so much because their beaches remain the least touched by Manhattan glamour. When I beach, I do it casually, so maybe I’m really still a Hamptons girl, but I like the peace and laid back vibes that you can only find in Montauk. Now there’s a new kid on the block where everyone can enjoy the cool energy for a long weekend, mid-week retreat or just a cocktail on the water.
Rob McKinley (he’s designed it as well), Steven Kamali, Jamie Mulholland, Jayma Cardosa and Steve Kasuba have created the hippest new hangout in the Hamptons - The Surf Lodge. They are the grand Manhattan kings and queen of Goldbar and Cain - they’ve successfully had spots in the Hamptons and currently have the hottest beach spot on Paradise Island in the Bahamas at their Cain at the Cove. Cain at the Cove is like a lush beach/pool/club playground and I expect the Surf Lodge will be a great addition to the family.
