Gwyneth Paltrow Hits Nick & Toni’s

gwyneth paltrow in the hamptonsAs I will be gone in PA for the wedding of New York City Ballet’s Principal Ballerina Abi Stafford, I decided to come enjoy my house just for Thursday night. Since I hadn’t been to Nick & Toni’s in awhile, I found myself craving their famous roast chicken and zucchini chips! The service was particularly bad which was very out of character, and it wasn’t long before I realized why! All attention was being paid to one large table where sat Gwyneth Paltrow and her friends! And a friend informed me that she graced The Laundry with her mother the night before…

No surprise… This weekend Miss Paltrow with friends Madonna and Steven Klein and Detail’s magazine from 8-11 on August 9th will be hosting a benefit for Amaryllis Equine rescue at Steven’s estate. The tickets are a pricey $500 however, so I hope you’ve been saving up!

Rob Gettling’s Bathtub Lobsters At The Dock House

The Dock House, Sag Harbor
[The Dock House, Sag Harbor]

Why We Love The Dock House in Sag Harbor:

  • Because they write their menu on old school chalkboards
  • Because you get to pick out your own lobster
  • Because their lobsters are housed in an old bathtub
  • Because Rob Gettling, the MAN IN CHARGE is one of the coolest guys in town
  • Because you get to hold a seashell with your order number written on it
  • Because they have the best Oysters to Go
  • Because the pasta salad, the corn on the cob, the chicken salad and the lobster are too good not to
  • Because they have a diner-like coffee bar
  • Because you get to sit on old barrels while watching the ships dock in the harbor outside
  • Because it serves the best no-hassle seafood on Long Wharf

Why We Love Pierre’s

Because c’est adorable, in an upscale but personal tropical resorty way. Because it serves straight-from-the-oven croissants and almond brioche in the early morning. Because the mimosas and mango bellinis are effervescent perfection. Because most of the ingredients on the French/New American menu are locally sourced. Because the main courses (like parmesan-encrusted Chilean sea bass and a Long Island duck magret) are called “Plats de Resistance.” Because there’s also a cheerful yellow bar, and, on Tuesdays, live music. Jody Carlson and her band go on at 8, and I hear they do a mean “Mountains of Things.” See you there!

BYOBing A Hamptons Don’t?

bring your own boozeOkay, I know I just waxed rawther enthusiastic over Lenndevours, but one of his posts deals with where one can byob on Long Island. At school, this was often one of my friends and my restaurant criteria, but I haven’t noticed anyone doing likewise out here. Indeed, none of the entries on Thompson’s list or in his commenters’ suggestions are located on the east end.

Hamptons Hamburgers

gourmet hamburgerReading the NYT article this morning on Parisians’ new obsession with burgers has got me a) drooling, and b) wondering where’s best round here to do something about it.

I know Rachelle loves the Surf Lodge’s egg-topped version, and The Palm does a fantastic broiled sirloin one, but I figure, as burgers are the consumate summer food and the Hamptons are, right now at least, a consumate summer getaway, that there must be myriad other options. I’m not so interested in the haute burger -the city has those in abundance. What I’m looking for is simplicity and highest quality ingredients, cooked medium rare. Suggestions?

Rhett Miller Shows Us How To Do A Sunday

By Sunday most people are just FINALLY getting into their weekend groove, which is really unfortunate considering Monday’s imminent doom.  Sunday nights are the worst. Which is why, you must make an extra effort to fill your weekend with magic to forget about the dwindling hours of freedom.  Surf Lodge is here to help.  Last Sunday they showed us all how a  party SHOULD be done hosting Rhett Miller who became part of the gorgeous sunset backdrop.

Jeffery Chodorow’s Kobe Club Expansion Proves Not Everyone Reads Reviews

Jeffery Chodorow

Though Frank Bruni and Adam Platt eviscerated Jeffery Chodorow’s exotic steak mothership, all three Kobe Clubs (the other two are in Miami and East Hampton), are doing well enough for Chodorow to lay down plans for a fall Acapulco branch and another, whose exact location has yet to be determined, in L.A. Certainly the Kobe Beach Club here has been a major success -every time I’ve driven by, its parking lot has been clogged with luxury European automobiles. Perhaps sharing space with Lily Pond has its benefits? Why We Love Townline BBQ

townline bbqBecause the menu is simple, rib-stickin Texan ‘cue. Because the menu’s printed on a board, McDonald’s style, in fat red letters. Because the staff are friendly, and honest. “You sure you want that?” one asked Rachelle after she ordered the fried mac ‘n cheese. Because she did want it, and rightly so.

Because, in addition to burnt ends, pulled chicken, and ribs, Townline also offers something called Texas caviar, a mix of black-eyed peas, peppers, onions, and lime chili sauce. Because the decor is a mix of industrial chic and rustic lodge. Because a meal there will tide you over all week. More »

The Candy Kitchen Impresses Again

ice cream in bridgehamptonBy John Hering
So here I am again, rating food without qualification. But I will try to explain with integrity why The Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton has the best ice cream I have ever scooped. A high compliment to be sure, but I feel the CK is deserving. Upon employee recommendation I enjoyed a two scoop bowl (for $6.50! Damn these Hamptons), half strawberry and half banana.

World Pie Not Quite Ready To Go Global

world pizzaDon’t get me wrong; World Pie, in downtown Bridgehampton, has very, very good pizza. The crust is thin and lightly chewy, the cheese a high quality mozzarella, the toppings fresh, fairly original, and reasonably generous. We ordered the “Farmstand,” which featured summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, and cheese, and, while I would have loved a higher ratio of vegetables to cheese, the whole thing was gone in 5 minutes.

Still, $23 for a meatless, average-sized pie? I’m not exactly a pizza connoisseur, but this seems a bit high. Add to that the fact that our table remained breadless despite several requests and yearning glances, only to arrive, with flourish, two minutes after our meal, and I can’t help but mark it down. Nello Summertimes, Southampton Vs. Dino’s Anytime, Lincoln, NE

Nello Summertimes

Ketel One and soda at Nello Southampton: $27.00

Cocktail at Dino”s, Lincoln, Nebraska: $4.50

Yeah we”ve been saying Nello”s was overpriced for a long time now, but this disparity above is just comical.  Thank you Eater for documenting what we all already know: we are paying way too much at our dining establishments out here. It”s things like this that make it hard for my parents to bite their tongues when visiting.  The funniest part about this is that the cocktails at Dino”s are actually good.  Ah, the good life.

B. Smith’s, Sag Harbor: Another Lobster Enters The Fray, Sans Roll

sag harbor lobsterWhen my mother came to visit this past Sunday, she wanted three things: beach, beer, and bivalves on the half shell. The beach she got at the Surf Club in Quogue; the beer, clams, and oysters came courtesy of B. Smith’s in Sag Harbor.

This seafood restaurant just past the windmill has a lovely deck overlooking the harbor, a surprisingly eclectic menu (curried oysters with wasabi coconut sauce, cornmeal-encrusted calamari), and charming, courteous service. It also has lobsters, and I decided to order one. More »

Fresno After Sunday

fresno new american cuisineIn the Spring of 2004, veteran restauranteurs David Loewenberg and Michael Nolan opened up what soon became one of my favorite restaurants in the Hamptons, and now my favorite summer prix-fixe!

On a quiet street behind the East Hampton train station - the street for which the restaurant is named, there humbly rests Fresno. Sister restaurants include The Beacon in Sag Harbor and Red Bar Brasserie in Southampton. My first meal here of New American cuisine left me grinning from ear to ear. More »

Vincenzo’s Open Sesame Wonders: The Best $4 Can Buy

sag harbor pizza parlourWell maybe I shouldn’t call it the “best,” as it’s the only Long Island pizza I’ve had, but Vincenzo’s Pizza in downtown Sag Harbor doles out quality slices by any standards (though be prepared to spend between $3-4 per). While not the “bang for your buck” a little pizza shop should be, Vincenzo’s does serve hefty portions and isn’t afraid to push the pizza-greased envelope. The tomato-onion-bacon slice I had was flavorful and light, and leaving off the tomato sauce allowed me to actually taste the toppings. The crust was a delightfully thin, crunchy surprise, topped with sesame seeds. More »

Why Bay Burger’s Buns Are Fully Loaded

bay burger american hamburgerBay Burger manages to be both an every man’s and locavore’s culinary boner, for everything -trademark 1/3lb all beef patties, grilled cheese, hand cut fries, veggie burgers, bread, buns, homemade ice cream, wine, beer, and produce, is either homemade or locally-sourced.

Why We Love Spinnakers

sag harbor american restaurantBecause it’s in downtown Sag Harbor, which might be our new favorite village. Because it has a wooden sign; which is usually a good indication of class and quality. Why We Love Princess Diner

southampton diner

Because it isn’t upscale kitschy; it’s just kitschy. Because you can never have too much chrome. Because it serves sardine sandwiches. With coleslaw. And onion rings. Because the food is actually good. Because it has deep, comfy booths. Because the ice cream comes in silver dishes. Because the waitstaff is professional, and quick. Because the portions, like the prices, are decidedly un-Hamptonian.

Annona Shares Her Harvest

Annona WesthamptonLocation can be misleading; when I read that the restaurant Annona was located above (and owned by) the Coachworks/MMH showroom, I imagined indifferent, overpriced eats in a faux-opulent setting. Not so, apparently. The critics from NYT, NY Mag, and Newsday are only a few of the simple Italian menu’s fans, and with dishes like wood-oven roasted octopus, wild mushroom risotto, and seared scallops with morels and sunchoke puree, I can see why. Fridays, Annona boasts live music and 2 for 1 drink specials, so if sipping a Fleur de Amore (tequila, fresh grapefruit, and elderberry liquor) while listening to acoustic guitar sounds like your idea of a happy hour, you might want to head over to Westhampton this evening.

Surf Lodge Buys Their Glasses From Bowery Street

surf lodge buys glasses from bowery street

It’s Wednesday…which means it’s the day I start itching to get back out east where there’s open air to run around in and no office meetings. While I’ll be back there tomorrow already, I still miss the Hamptons today. That’s why, when I saw this box outside the restaurant supply store on Bowery street I had to smile. It was just sitting there, getting ready to get loaded into a truck and be taken out for shipment to…SURF LODGE in Montauk!? I know Surf Lodge! I was just there! Oh what great mussels they have there! Oh what an attractive staff they have! Oh what a great deck! I exclaimed in my head, like I had a secret that no one else passing by could share in on. More »

Loaves And Fishes Isn’t Just For Wishes

loaves and fishes sagaponackThough Loaves and Fishes is perhaps most famous for its $100/lb lobster salad, I can’t hate it, or even scoff at it. For one thing, it has a terrific, if ironic name (methinks the original loaves and fishes were gratis), and for another, the quality is really high (especially in that lobster salad, which is made daily from Montauk lobsters). Plus the modest white shop, perched on the corner of Sagg Main and 27, is just too cute. Apart from the sticker shock, Loaves and Fishes is a very welcoming, homey place, overflowing with picnic-primed goodies. If you’re watching your wallet, I’d suggest going for some of the cheaper items (fresh baked rustic boules, all sorts of cheeses, charcuterie, savory and sweet tarts), and hitting the obliging staff up for samples of the rest.

Our Crush On Surf Lodge Heats Up

I slept like a baby last night. In fact, I don’t even remember the last time I’ve had such a comfortable sleep, but I was probably in my preoperational stage of development. No doubt, Piaget would be smiling on behalf of my good fortune, one in which I have one man in particular to thank: Sam Talbot. I had fried “chow chow” oysters, scallops atop an unprecedented partner in crime: mr. watermelon salad, a famous lobster roll sandwich, and orgasmic thai mussels floating around in my belly…which sent me into such a comfortable slumber that not even the horseflys above, choppering away with their city guests in tow could stir me this morning. We are only in the start of the season, but this spot makes me want to dive into an endless summer, much like I dove into their drink bearing the same name.

The Vogue photographer in the foyer belied the laid back vibe inside…unlike most “of the moment hot spots”, I could live on their deck for days without leaving and be a happy happy girl, looking out over their lake and drifting off into dreams of halcyon summers.

The White Buffalo To Stampede Surf Lodge

We know we mention Surf Lodge fairly often, but that’s because it. is. awesome. I’m not really sure where all the “go back to Jersey” comments come from, as both times I’ve gone the scene’s been very low-key hipster, with great views and even greater food. Why We (Along With Everyone Else) Love Suki Zuki

When Paul Longo recommended Suki Zuki as one of the Hamptons’ permanently buzzing, and buzz-worthy restaurants, I was a bit taken aback. I’d biked by it during the day, and figured it was a little takeout joint, most likely expensive and, since sushi is one of the food groups of the ladies who lunchish, probably good. “We have to go,” Rachelle decided, and it turns out she, and Paul, were right. On a Sunday night, Suki Zuki was dimly lit, cozy, and filled with the chatter of the tanned and tennis-toned. The chefs behind the sushi bar looked like they knew what they were doing, so we ordered a platter of  assorted sashimi and sushi, and some lobster rolls, a basket of steamed vegetables, and the shredded chicken salad both of our neighbors were devouring. Interview With Turtle Crossing’s “Purple Turtle” Creators

Claire and I were the very first guests at Turtle Crossing’s “Turtle Tuesdays” last night…where you go dressed in turtle garb to receive your free “Purple Turtle”, the drink invented by chef Arthur and served by bartender Greg. This hot spot in East Hampton is quickly becoming a favorite of ours. We had fish tacos over Memorial Day weekend, and last night we got to try their specialties: jalapeno-stuffed hush puppies and parmesan-encrusted grilled corn on the cob (my favorite!) If Southwestern grub isn’t your thing, go for the drinks, the cool staff, and the in-the-know patrons. Not only were we given a full tour of the place (including the kitchen),  we also learned about all of the spots favored by the locals directly from the horse’s mouth…the fabulous local lady who shared the scoop with us, as well as her hush puppies! mmmmm……

Hamptons Cliche Of The Week: Nello Summertimes

It seems the socialites abounded at Nello this past Saturday. The Southampton outpost of the Madison Ave original features mediterranean cuisine, Peter Beard art, and al fresco dining for the apathetic palates of the see-and-be-scenesters.

Pros: gawking material

Cons: the gawkees, $5,000 tabs, “where’s waldo” edibles, posing, preening, waiting while one’s rover is retrieved midst a sea of its brethren, dogs in purses

Round Swamp Farm: Why It’s Worth Coming ‘Round

Sure, we all have our favorite place to buy sweet corn and local produce, and I am not recommending that you let your loyalties stray, but there is one magical farm stand in East Hampton that offers something that few stands do: Round Swamp Farm on Three Mile Harbor. Not only do they have amazing produce, Round Swamp also has a fish market that rivals any high-end grocery in freshness. Throwing together a last minute dinner party? Instead of making your own guacamole, pick it up at Round Swamp. You won’t be disappointed. On your way to the beach? Bring some of their famous “chicken balls” as a snack. They’re DELICIOUS and come in both the buffalo and BBQ varieties. Wash them down with Shelly’s Sun Tea which is unique to Round Swamp and the most deliciously refreshing iced tea I have ever tasted. Turtle Tuesdays, Or Why You Should Have Kept Your TMNT Memorabilia

Last weekend, on Rachelle’s and my night of attempts, we managed to accomplish one thing: a southwestern-style pig-out, brought to us by the terrific kitchen of Turtle Crossing (and our Sacajawea of a driver). If it hadn’t been nearing on midnight, we would doubtless lingered over jalepeno hush puppies and TC’s lauded margaritas. Today, starting at five, you can augment your lingering with free Purple Turtle cocktails (Christiana vodka, sour apple, and grape juice). The catch? Make sure you have something turtle-adorned with or on you. Out of luck? Email me; thirteen years of my life were spent swimming for a team whose mascot was a snapping turtle. That’s a lot of tee-shirts.

It’s early Spring… the season of soft-shell crabs, asparagus, rhubarb and berries. But for the famous seafood shop in between Amagansett and Montauk called The Lobster Roll (most commonly known as “Lunch”) something else is in season… a specialty dish unique to The Lobster Roll called “Puffers.”
So what are these scrumptious treats? They are literally the tail portion of a blowfish, battered, deep fried and served with tartar sauce and (if you ask nicely) malt vinegar. But hurry up! Puffers are only in season for about two more weeks! More »

Surf Lodge is Eater-Approved!

Sam Talbot’s lobster rolls were a large part of the reason I was so excited about hitting up Surf Lodge this past Sunday, so you can imagine how disappointed I was when I arrived to find the kitchen closed. Now, thanks to our gourmand buddies over at Eater, you can also imagine how good these rolls must be. Eater didn’t like everything (apparently the burgers lack oomph), but they were surprised at the amount of potential in the venue, especially as it was only day 2. Maybe passing up on Spitzer’s Corner was actually a blessing in disguise…

Interview With Surf Lodge’s Sam Talbot

surf lodge deck lounge sam talbot

Most establishments in the Hamptons seem to fall into one of two categories: old, small, and humble, or new, sprawling, and ostentatious. What then, do we make of Montauk’s Surf Lodge, which opens shop this friday? It’s a new venture, sure, but it’s relatively cozy (32 individually decorated rooms), with tastefully, and playfully nautical appointments. It’s got three bars (the Den, the Bar, and the Deck) and, best of all, Punch exec chef, Top Chef finalist, and winner of Glad’s Steamiest Chef contest, Sam Talbot in its local produce-filled kitchen.

Eager to get some insight into what promises to be the newest member of the Hamptons hotspot coterie, we give Talbot a call…. More »
