Bridgehampton Polo Update: Cotton Candy, Colored Wayfarers, and Champagne

This past Saturday, the Bridgehampton Polo Grounds was a family place, thanks to shoe boutique Stride Rite and its bevy of face painters, cotton candy machines, games from Space Odyssey USA, and bejeweled, celeb-designed gameboys. On the field, Team Black Watch duked it out against Team Pony Express, while Perrier-Joeut-fueled grown-ups divot-stomped, hobnobbed with ex-reality stars, and preened for photos atop a souped up Mercedes-Benz.

Bring Your Babies To The Polo Field

stride riteWell, judging from pictures past, you already are, but this Saturday Stride Rite is sponsoring a Kids Day at the fields. Reading the press announcement made me laugh -my siblings and I always got our shoes at the Stride Rite in Wellesley, picked out and shoved onto our feet by a very grumpy fleet of oldsters. My brother once told one of them he looked like a Paul McCartney Cabbage Patch doll, which, veracity aside, didn’t go over all that well.

Anyways, Space Odyssey USA’s providing some pretty sick entertainment for the little ‘uns, leaving you to watch the horsies in peace. For a second. Right after spilling your third cup of Perrier-Jouet over Nicky Hilton.

Why Bridgehampton Polo Is A Match Made In Gossip Heaven

This Saturday July 19th marked opening day of the 2008 Summer Season of the Mercedez-Benz Polo Challenge, a day not dared to be missed by Polo fanatics OR social scions. Probably one of the most quintessential things to do on summer Saturdays in the Hamptons is to attend the polo matches at the Bridgehampton Polo Club on Hayground Road.

By “attending Polo”, I’m not talking about pulling up to the field with a basket full of cold cuts and some wine coolers to enjoy while watching the games from the bleachers. I’m talking about attending Polo on the other side – the side behind the white picket fence (literally) that has that big white tent with the un-missable Mercedez-Benz emblem on it. That is known as the VIP tent, and that is where “Polo” really happens.

Our Polo Cups Runneth Over, But With What?

I went once to the horse races in Sarasota, and what I remember more than the barreling steeds is the rampant inebriation. Save for my twelve-year-old self, every spectator seemed to sport a ruddy face, soppy shirt, and either a cooler of Bud or a jug of planter’s punch. I know that polo’s only similarity to horse racing is the horse part, but, judging from this video and the fact that it is an open-air, summertime event, I’m guessing that this weekend’s crowd is going to be somewhat loosened up.
