Elton John refers to Rufus Wainwright (best known as the voice behind the soundtracks of “Moulin Rouge” and “Shrek”) as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” but his unique orchestral pop music has reached far beyond film soundtracks. Last Saturday, the artist performed at the Robert Wilson Watermill Center for “The Last Song of Summer” concert, along with Jörn Weisbordt, Daniel Knox, and Jessye Norman.

The EquiFit Benefit At Laundry In East Hampton

From: guestofaguest.com:

I’m not sure how much the tickets were to the EquiFit benefit out at the Laundry restaurant in East Hampton this past weekend, but these guys were going to make SURE to get every penny’s worth. What do you do when you’re at a PR driven benefit with nothing to do? You make up your own silent auction rules and start breaking loose under the tents of course. This event was held to benefit the Equestrian Aid Foundation, and it is clear that this gentleman is doing his part to support the cause.

Rufus Wainwright, The “Greatest Songwriter On The Planet” At Last Song Of Summer

rufus wainwright[Photo via Hamptons.com]

You may know Rufus Wainwright best as the voice behind the soundtracks of “Moulin Rouge” and “Shrek”, but his unique orchestral pop music has reached far beyond film soundtracks.

Elton John refers to him as “the greatest songwriter on the planet.”

This Saturday, starting at 4pm, Rufus will be performing at Robert Wilson Watermill Center’s “Last Song of Summer”, a benefit for the arts. Legendary female opera singer Jessye Norman will be joining him.  Rufus, who is no newcomer to the beach culture (he grew up spending his summer’s on Shelter Island), recently sat down with Hamptons.com to go over his newest project, “Prima Donna” an opera he was commissioned to produce for the Met, as well as his upcoming show in Watermill, his role as a homosexual artist, and the future of his pop career.

The Red Cross Turns 125!

Last Saturday, Aug. 23, we headed to Stone Meadow Farm in East Hampton (the place where Mariah Carey recently got married) to celebrate the 125th birthday of the American Red Cross.  On the way in, I was greeted by Rob Rich, and so, we finally meet in person!  I also walked in at the same time as my friend Heinz Haas, the tennis pro/teacher who has some BIG things coming up.  Russell Simmons, was there, (his jewelry line was one of the evening’s sponsors) as was George Gurley who was interviewing guests on thier favorite moments of the summer. Russell said it was the summer of:

“Barack Obama, as well as yoga, the environment, PETA, the Humane Society and fund-raisers (his July 19 Art for Life event raised $1.7 million).” [The Observer]

Gossip Girl Premiere In Sag Harbor

ed westwick
[Photo via Hanging in the Hamptons]

I am (just a little) sorry I missed the Gossip Girl premiere bash this Saturday night at the EMM Group Estate in Sag Harbor. I think it ironic that it took place in Sag Harbor, the least-Gossip-Girly spot out here (though the EMM Estate is more than fitting with their Don Julio VIP room that everyone hung out in). Also, Ed Westwick is looking a little rough for wear in these photos….maybe he just got back from a tough day of sailing? I can not WAIT for Season Two to jump start.

A New Month, A New Social Life Cover, Another Social Life Party

devorah1At the beginning of every month out east there are two things I look forward to: The new release of Social Life Magazine AND the Issue Release Party at the Social Life Estate in Watermill. The two go together better than peanut butter and jelly. Early August was no exception as the east end jet-setters pulled themselves away from the BH Polo matches to get ready to celebrate Polo player Chris Del Gatto’s Social Life Cover at the SL Estate.

This is the one party that you always have to get to on time or you won’t be getting in. OR, you might get in but you have to worry whether your Porsche out front is getting towed. By the time I left I watched the angry cops taking pleasure in towing luxurious cars like the blue Porsche convertible that was parked next to the driveway. Ironically, the cops were not toying with the Hondas or Fords. Clearly some selective animosity there!
