Preserving The Other Hamptons

preserve by emmett shine

Preserve is a open-ended documentary project started this summer photographing local youths of the Hamptons in their natural environments. From the Native American Reservation in Southampton to the back parking lots of Sag Harbor, the teens of the Hamptons are seen as they are - complex, diverse teens existing in a dual environment of opulent excess and working-class strife.

The show is this Saturday, August 30th from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at 2546 Montauk Hwy (directly behind the old Bulls’ Head Inn). Emmett Shine was kind enough to give us an exclusive look at some of his photos that make up part of this project.  We will be showcasing them all week long.

Preserve. A Photography Exhibition

preserve

“A celebration of local eastern Long Island photographers and the place they call home”.

In the ever populating Hamptons, it is not always easy to stay afloat during the fast paced summer months. But for many of us it is not just the summer fun that we live here for. More important is the beauty of the land that we grew up in, its tranquility, and our friends — both ordinary and high profile folks alike.

With big new money, corporate moguls eye business opportunities in our small towns, intending to replace locally owned businesses with ever-expanding corporate models. Without standing up for a lifestyle we believe in and a community we hold dear, this lovely place we call “home” will soon be over-developed while the charm that once made it so special will be lost for future generations — historic buildings and protective variances becoming a thing of the past.

Yoko Ono-Lennon On John Lennon Exibition

Yoko Ono-Lennon“Come Together” is a look into John Lennon’s Life Through His Artwork, and will be held at the Southampton Inn from August 22-24.  Legacy Productions has been working directly with Yoko Ono-Lennon and the Estate of John Lennon to bring up to 20 art exhibitions a year featuring over 100 individual pieces of artwork by John.

This exhibit will include hand-signed pieces and limited edition prints, serigraphs, lithographs, copper etchings and aqua tints.  Proceeds from this exhibition will beneifit the Human Resources of the Hamptons.  Hamptons.com recently did a phone interview with Yoko to get the details on this amazing exhibit:

Is there a particular reason or any significance as to why the Hamptons were chosen as one of the venues for this year’s exhibition?

Yoko: Well, most people consider the Hamptons to be a place of luxury, wealth and pampering, so perhaps this exhibition, with its connection to the Human Resources of the Hamptons, will be an eye-opening experience. A charity that helps those that are not so fortunate or wealthy.

“As any equestrian worth her jodhpurs can tell you, the relationship between a woman and her horse transcends the boundaries of sport.” [W]

This Saturday, Steven Klein will play host once more, along with Gwyneth Paltrow and MADONNA (!) at a benefit for the Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue.  It will be held at Steve Kleins’ Watermill center and there will be a performance from Olympic Rider Robert Dover.  Information on purchasing tickets can be found on the invite below, though this event has probably been sold out days ago.

The Greatest Silence Gets Some Sound

lisaIn the war-torn zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo, soldiers rely on more than weapons as means of subjugation. Every year, tens of thousands of women and children are kidnapped and subjected to torture, mulitation, and rape at the hands of the Congolese army. Demanding to know the reasons behind these acts, and why so little was being done to stop them, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Lisa F. Jackson traveled to the DRC herself.

There, she interviewed activists, physicians, soldiers, and survivors, in the hopes of pinpointing the why’s. Harrowing, chilling, and occasionally inspiring (somehow many of the survivors, after undergoing some of the most hellish experiences known to man, still have spirit and faith!), it’s easy to see why Jackson’s documentary won last year’s Special Jury prize at Sundance.

Tonight, it will be screened at the Quogue Library at 8.

Russell Young Dusts The Keszler Gallery With Diamonds

diamond dust

The British photographer Russell Young got his start shooting the rock stars and pop tarts of the late 80’s (George Michael, Dylan, Morrissey, Springsteen) before segueing into music videos during a time when MTV was still relevant. Ten years in, he began to paint, though it took him until 2003 to put together a show, the immensely successful (and, natch, controversial) Pig Portraits. His work, which reminds me of a more low-key, less cluttered Warhol, Young writes “is sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. My method of working is to search, destroy and create…” More »
