Your Own Private Beach Sancutary In The Amagansett Dunes

[Photos and story by reader "Adamar"]

Most of the oceanfront in the Hamptons is consumed by upscale expensive homes, sometimes multi-zillion dollar mansions. This often limits non-oceanfront homeowners from ready access to the beach, requiring them to travel to the town beaches by car. There is one community of homes whose owners have access to a private stretch of oceanfront called Beach Hampton in the Amagansett dunes from Mako Lane (off Bluff Road) to Napeague Lane (off Montauk Hwy) stretching down to Marine Blvd. on the ocean.

The hurricane of 1938 wiped out many of the beach homes and cottages in the area. Beginning in the 1970’s, the large tract of vacant land was slowly sold in small lots and a community of more modern beach homes started to come to life. At the beginning of 1970, you could have bought a modest new 4-bedroom home on 1/4 acre starting in the low $30k range or about $7-8k for 1/4 acre of land. Today, that same 1/4 acre, if you could find it, would be worth $1 million or more.

Hamptons House Of The Day

fort on amagansett beach

Some may call it more of a fort than a house, but I’d take shelter in this fort on a Saturday afternoon over any mansion on Further Lane.  Spotted on the dunes of Amagansett.

A Taj Mahal In Amagansett

blues singerWorld music, though it may contain hints of several cultures, usually focuses on one. The music of the great bluesman Taj Mahal, however, manages to combine reggae, zydeco, jazz, caribbean, hawaiian, and west african folk, latin american street music, and gospel, into coherent, and suprisingly unforced melodies.

Taj (born Henry St. Clair Fredricks) has been composing and performing since the 60’s, and his music has evolved from pure rootsy blues to its current multi-ethnic busking, from one acoustic guitar to 20 different instruments, without losing steam or heart. Tonight, he’s playing at the Talkhouse at 8; general admission’s $150, and VIP’s $165. Click here to buy tickets, and do it soon as they’re almost gone!

Bloom On The Beach

If you’re like most people who summer in the Hamptons, you spend your days eating delicious BBQ and your nights drinking delicious cocktails. Although you would like to believe it, dancing on tabletops is not adequate exercise to burn off all those extra calories. Luckily Erika Bloom Pilates Plus has got you covered. Beginning this Saturday, Erika will be holding pilates mat sessions on the beach from 11 to 12. Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett may be a little far for most, but at $27 per class, or $125 for five classes, it’s worth it. So go ahead and have that cheeseburger with bacon, and then make sure you hit the beach in the morning. For more info call 212-288-3410.

The Stephen Talkhouse: Billy Joel, Tequila, and Hampton Rivalries

Stephen Talkhouse, AmagansettWhen I come out East, I stay in Westhampton, so Southampton is about as far as I’m willing to travel. I was meeting up with friends at The Stephen Talkhouse and was all smiles until they told me where it was. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Where is this place? Friend: Amagansett. Past East Hampton.

At which point I decided I wasn’t going. But I was told it would be worth it and the results were interesting. Talkhouse is where you go when you actually like the company you’re with. There’s live music, people are dancing, and after the last band goes on it feels just like a college bar. Billy Joel, Journey, and all your favorite sing-a-long hits are blaring through the speakers. Amagansett Pride

Last year, while I was buying my dad his Father’s Day gift (a 1928 framed postcard the Amagansett dunes) at A Little of What you Fancy in East Hampton, the shop owner told me about the rich history of Amagansett. I told her I had a rich history of Amagansett of my own; my family was one of the original settling families of Amagansett. She was impressed. I was kidding; sort of. While my last name is not GARDINER (have you heard of Gardiner’s Bay??) and I am not exactly Hamptons multi-generational legacy, the Marshall Family was one the first families to inhabit the Amagansett dunes in the 1970’s (I’m talking about before there were paved roads down in the dunes AND before I was even born). What Thor Hath Wrought

What’s really frightening about this is that storm season has scarcely begun. Maybe it’s a good thing the Amagansett Farmer’s Market has yet to reopen.  Thanks to reader for sending in this pic!

Eating With Eater

Saturday, we headed out to Amagansett for a barbeque at Casa del Eater. I’d always figured that food bloggers were better in the front of the house, but Ben Leventhal and his boys proved me wrong -8-hour smoked pork and grilled peaches wrong. Oh, and they even satisfied Rachelle’s “feels like home” corn on the cob fetish. While we were unsuccessful in our attempts to tape the festivities, the party was total low-key perfection, filled with interesting people (bloggers, bankers, yogis, VJs, psychologists), great music (the National and Digable Planets), and seriously good food. Why Mary Is Marvelous: An Interview With Mary Schoenlein

On Amagansett’s Main Street, there’s a little white shop with a red door and a sign which proclaims, in flowing letters, “Mary’s Marvelous.” Inside, there’s that pleasant bustle that accompanies beloved neighborhood institutions, and a beyond pleasant array of baked goods and take-away. Intrigued by the alliteration and the crowds attesting to it, we caught up with owner Mary Schoenlein, a former pastry chef at Gotham Bar and Grill and the current muffin mama for what seems to be half of the south shore, to discuss cookbooks, gardens, and what happens when the muffins run out… More »

The End Of An Amagansett Era

For 54 years, the Amagansett Farmer’s Market has been a staple of the village but for the first summer in over half a century, the market will not be open. The eight-acre plot of land that the market sits on (just east of Amagansett village) is being sold by the Struck family to the Town of East Hampton to be placed in the Peconic Land Trust.
